Kwethluk River Science Camp, July 19-29, 2009

Craig Feinstein was a last minute volunteer who went to Yukon Delta NWR in Bethel where he assisted the refuge with the Kwethluk River Weir Science Camp. He helped to row a large raft for five days on the river, camping out and talking with the teens, until they arrived at the Fish Weir, staffed by scientists and biologists. Here they had classes on fish biology and related science.

Craig reports:
"It was a pretty cool trip. I have never rowed a boat that big before by myself, so that was a new experience. Luckily there was another guy on the boat who worked for the refuge and who had lots of rowing experience and was in really good shape so he did the majority of the rowing or we could have been in trouble. But I had lots of fun with what I did and overall enjoyed the camp and the scenery. We did get stuck an extra night up river. Thanks to the guys at the weir who had an unexpected 18 house guests (including 12 kids) and were very welcoming."

"My favorite part was just getting to see a part of the state I had never visited before and an area that I would probably not get to on my own. I also enjoyed hearing the kids talk about life at home and what they enjoyed doing."
