Dalton Highway White Sweet-Clover Project: June 22-28 / July 27-Aug 1, 2009

The first Dalton Invasives project for 2009 took place in June, with Betty Siegel helping the Kanuti Manager and Deputy Manager coordinate the event which was without the usual BLM leader. Four SCA interns assisted in this effort.

Four Friends went to the second Dalton Invasives project in July (Tom Balland, Sharon Baur, Merrill Jensen, and Betty Siegel). Working in smoky air and attempting to eradicate the prolific white sweet clover and additionally bird’s eye vetch was overwhelming at times but this hard working crew with four refuge staff made a valiant effort.

All river crossings between the Kanuti River and Coldfoot were cleared, as well as a patch by the entrance to Marion Creek Campground and along the side road into the airport. All was done by hand except for two volunteers using weed trimmers the last day to clear large areas which could not otherwise be removed. The entire airport runway area was also surveyed and no invasive plants were found there.
